Safety Compliance

Bathroom Zones Explained Simply

Water and electricity are a lethal combination. As a certified bathroom electrician in Bournemouth, we strictly adhere to BS7671 zone regulations. Here is a plain-English breakdown of how we classify your bathroom layout:

  • Zone 0

Directly inside the bath tub or shower tray floor. Any equipment here must be low voltage (max 12V) and fully submersible (IPX7).

  • Zone 1

The area directly above the bath or shower, up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. Fittings here (like shower downlights) must be protected against water jets (IP65 rated).

  • Zone 2

Reaching 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath or shower (and above the sink). Lighting here must be splash-proof (IP44). Shaver sockets are permitted here if safely isolated.

  • Outside Zones

The rest of the bathroom. While standard rules apply, we still ensure all circuits supplying the bathroom are protected by highly sensitive RCDs at your consumer unit.

Why a NAPIT-accredited electrician matters

Electrical work in a bathroom is "notifiable" under Part P of the Building Regulations. We automatically certify our work and notify the local authority for you, ensuring your home insurance and future saleability remain intact.

Signature Service

Bathroom Lighting Bournemouth.

Bathroom lighting requires a careful balance. You need shadow-free illumination for shaving or applying makeup, but you also want the ability to create a relaxing, ambient atmosphere when soaking in the bath.

Warm White (3000K)

Produces a soft, golden glow. Perfect for secondary lighting (like LED strips in alcoves) to create a spa-like, relaxing environment.

Cool White (4000K)

Crisp and bright. Ideal for IP65 downlights over the shower and mirror lighting, ensuring a clean, clinical light for precise morning routines.

"SC Electric helped us redesign the lighting for our en-suite. Their advice on splitting the downlights from the alcove LEDs onto separate dimmers completely changed the feel of the room."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I install a normal plug socket in a bathroom?

Under BS7671 regulations, standard 3-pin sockets are only permitted in a bathroom if they are installed at least 3 metres horizontally from the boundary of Zone 1 (the bath or shower). For most UK bathrooms, this means they are not allowed. Shaver and toothbrush sockets are permitted in Zone 2 if they are SELV isolated.

Q. What does IP65 mean for bathroom lighting?

IP65 is an ingress protection rating that means the light fitting is 'dust tight' and protected against water projected from a nozzle. This makes IP65 downlights perfect and legally compliant for Zone 1 (directly above your shower enclosure).
